Role Overview

As a Business Process Management Architect, you will play a key role in advancing and optimizing our patented software automation platform. You will lead process discovery and mining technology products, provide innovative solutions, and support professional services engagements. Your contributions will directly impact the growth and success of American Express.

Key Responsibilities:

• Hands-on Technical Leadership (25%):

  • Lead and apply analysis from research to recommend technical solutions.

• Design & Lead Solutions:

  • Develop frameworks, interfaces, and reusable services for one or more portfolios.

• Architecture Consistency:

  • Ensure that the architecture aligns with enterprise architecture standards, guidelines, and principles.

• Collaboration with Engineering Teams:

  • Work with engineering teams to ensure implementation aligns with Technical Platform Blueprints and roadmaps.

• Influence Business Improvements:

  • Contribute to technology direction, develop architecture, and influence implementation for measurable business improvements.

• Cross-functional Collaboration:

  • Regularly collaborate with other functional teams’ leadership and engineers to ensure the use of consistent solutions across platforms.

• Apply Industry Standards:

  • Apply specialized knowledge of industry standards to implement initiatives and adjacent solutions.

• Problem-Solving:

  • Tackle complex, broad-ranging problems and help solve them with innovative solutions.

• Stakeholder Engagement:

  • Interact with business partners to understand objectives and communicate the technical landscape.

• Business Product Innovation:

  • Introduce, adopt, and implement new technology to drive business product innovation.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Experience:

  • 10+ years of experience in engineering and/or architecture in complex environments, including successful design, creation, and deployment of enterprise-grade technology assets.

• Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field; advanced degree preferred.

• Technical Expertise:

  • Advanced knowledge of architectural disciplines, including business, data, application, technical, integration, and security to support business products.

• Technology Strategy Leadership:

  • Experience in creating and driving adoption of technology strategies with a focus on new impactful technologies.

• Adaptable Solutions:

  • Ability to adapt solution architecture to meet the needs of the enterprise, solving global-scale problems across multiple technology platforms.

• System Outages:

  • Lead efforts to prevent, diagnose, and resolve system outages with authority in the underlying architecture.

• Technology Architecture Experience:

  • Knowledge of containers, servers, networks, databases, cloud management, with expertise in at least one public cloud provider.

• Engineering Mindset:

  • Ability to write/read/debug code in Java, Python, or ReactJS.

• Collaboration with Architects:

  • Ability to collaborate effectively with architects and other specialists across multiple organizations.

• Experience with Automation & Process Mining:

  • Knowledge of business/technology automation, process mining, and discovery.

• Big Data & AI/ML Use Cases:

  • Experience in big data ecosystems for reporting, analytics, and AI/ML use cases.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Product Architect or Pre-sales Engineering Experience:

  • Proficient in delivering technology products or frameworks for enterprise-scale environments.

• AI Experience:

  • Exposure to and experience with AI technologies, including predictive, generative, and agentic AI.

• Architecture Styles:

  • Full understanding of service-oriented architecture (SOA), microservices, serverless architectures, and related design principles and optimization patterns.

• Experience with APIs & High-throughput Messaging:

  • Extensive experience with producing and consuming services through enterprise-grade APIs or using high-throughput messaging technologies.

• Channel-specific Architecture Skills:

  • Advanced skills in architecture for specific channels, such as web, mobile, voice, or interactive media.
